No one is exactly sure why the Sentinels, once celebrated as mankind’s first and best line of defense against mutants and other super powered beings, turned upon those they were supposed to safeguard, but they did. First, a legion of the things fell upon and decimated the once peaceful island nation of Genosha, killing mutants and humans in the thousands. In retaliation, believing the assault was launched by the U.S. the Brotherhood of Mutants struck out at the Pentagon visiting devastation upon the warmongering arm of that nation until the Avengers stood against them and somehow convinced Exodus to call off his minions.
And literal moments after they had accomplished that, the Sentinels fell upon every major city in the U.S. killing with impunity every mutant, meta and human alike… As the Brotherhood retreated to parts unknown the Avengers made their way to the nations’ capital and joined the X-Men in trying to put an end to the Sentinel attack. In the midst of the chaos Cyclops was barely able to prevent the Presidents’ death at the machinations of an Ultron controlled hybrid Sentinel but at the cost of his own life. His death however proved to be a trigger of sorts that caused Jean Grey to change in ways that are still reverberating through the cosmos. Dying in turn, Jean annihilated all of the existing Sentinels and then brought both herself and her love back from the brink. As heroes looked on the two vanished, leaving many to wonder if one threat had defeated only for something far more dangerous to have risen in its stead.
In the face of all of this, a seeming cure for mutation has been discovered and the Registration Act is being heavily altered, while Proposition X has been repealed in its entirety, things at least appear to be relatively quiet for the moment. Meanwhile, on the periphery of it all the Skrulls move in regimented numbers and with surgical precision, while the world at large remains largely ignorant of the looming threat.
