unadaptable :: Most people believe that leaders, nannies, and warriors must all be adaptable. That they must be able to think quickly and be able to change if something doesn’t quite go their way. This may be true, though whoever says as much must not have met the royal family of the Arkouda clan. The royal family is known for being stubborn and a bit stuck in their ways, and this is no expectation with Yingtai. While she tries to remain open-minded, along with her brother, there are some things that just can’t be changed. This includes religious beliefs, the concept of honor, and even tradition. While the average individual will not see the defensive or closed-minded side of Yingtai very often, there are occasions in which she can be found scolding a child for not doing what they are told, or getting testy when her prayers are interrupted.
protective :: Family comes first, at least for Yingtai. Although she has a tendency to avoid conflict altogether, she would not hesitate to fight tooth-and-claw if her family, the clan, or her wards were in danger. She isn’t some fair maiden who is incapable of holding her own – rather, quite the opposite. As a young cub, she was taught how to fight and kill alongside Nianzu. She received the same training as the king of Arkouda, but simply doesn’t put it to the test as often as her brother might. Although she could fight with the best of the warriors, she tends to use her teeth, claws, and roars to scare off the occasional stray badger or other critter instead.
lazy :: While Yingtai can be outgoing and spirited, this side of her is usually only seen during celebrations or other notable events. Most of the time, she is fairly lax and can be seen leaning against a cave wall or a tree that has managed to grow in the rocky terrain of the mountains, or even laying on her back and only ever rolling over if a cub gets too far away or appears to be doing something they shouldn't be. On occasion, she can be seen making her rounds through the camp's cave systems and around the base of the primary mountain where the rapids aren't as fierce. When she's on her walks, she is usually accompanied by the older cubs who are just beginning to wander and explore. These mid-afternoon strolls are a way for not only her to remain "in shape," but to also allow the children to exercise and perhaps even learn a thing or two.
gluttonous :: Like most giant pandas, Yingtai consumes food equalling roughly a sixth of her body weight each day in order to remain healthy. This means that food is important, especially to those of the Arkouda clan. As part of her afternoon lessons with the older cubs, Yingtai brings them down to the rapids and teaches them how to catch fish and scavenge berries that grow on the frosted bushes of the Snowberry Forest. While she is not a hunter - and it's a little laughable to think she would be fast enough or determined enough to gather enough food for the dynasty - she is not completely helpless. By catching and forging food with the young, she is providing food for herself, her wards, and also teaching them the basics of food-gathering.
faithful :: If there was one word to describe Yingtai, it would be "faithful." Having been raised as a member of the royal family, she learned how to be proud of her rich bloodline and she grew up hearing stories of the great warriors of the past. The idea of betrayal, disrespect, and liars leaves a bitter taste in her mouth and can send her on a rampage if one is not careful. She respected the natural order of things and gave up the position of power to her brother, who was ultimately more suited for the position, and she would give up her position again if it were for the betterment of the clan or if the superiors found she was unfit to hold her rank.
Due to her fairly laid-back and lazy personality and occupation, Yingtai is slightly larger in weight than her brother, clocking in at roughly 297 lbs. versus the 286 lbs. of Nianzu. Although she’s heavier than her brother, she is slightly smaller in size than the average giant panda, standing at just under 4 feet at the shoulders. With her height and weight combined, it should come as no surprise that her gait is slower than those around her. This poses no problem, however, since strength is her strong-suit rather than speed and agility. Her black-and-white fur is long and tangles on occasion, though it’s nothing that her long white claws can’t fix. Unlike most giant pandas, the pandas of the royal family have evolved over time to have a denser outer-layer of fur to protect them from snowfall in the mountains, and a thicker under-layer during the winter to keep them nice and warm. Truth be told, strangers have a difficult time telling the difference between Yingtai and her brother due to their similar appearances. Fortunately, her small size, her uniquely shaped eye patches, and the subtle black speckling around her nose helps distinguish her from the rest of her family.
(The follow paragraphs are inspired and, in parts, directly copied from Nianzu's profile in an attempt to make the siblings' bios seem more similar)
Yingtai's bloodline is rich with Arkouda history. Her parents, grandparents, and other kin all held powerful ranks within the dynasty - many of whom were successful rulers over the northern lands for a number of years. Like her brother, Yingtai was born and raised to one day lead the dynasty, though Nianzu was the one who ultimately prevailed and assumed the role of king. Their parents would speak of past battles and the heritage of Arkouda, including the wonderful story of their great, great kin Felipe - the honored warrior who perished in a border dispute years and years ago and, arguably, was the spark that began the conflicts which eventually came to be known as the Great Battle. Yingtai and Nianzu had a challenging upbringing, and the two of them fought tooth-and-claw to secure a place in the superior ranks. Their parents showed no mercy, wanting nothing but for them to be the best they possibly could be.
Yingtai's father was the first to die of her parents. Her father had become ill with something which the shaman seemed unable to cure, regardless of how they tried. His memory faded with each passing day. He could no longer recall the stories of Felipe, or names of clan-members, or even his own kin. It was painful to watch and, at some point, Yingtai decided to venture across the lands in pursuit of The Gods' Temple. She remained here for multiple days, spending every waking hour praying that her father's suffering end quickly, either through an honorable death or through a sudden wave of healing and life. After three days and hearing nothing from the gods, Yingtai returned home to find that her father had passed while she was gone. Many members of the Arkouda clan disapproved of her absence during her father's time of suffering, but she didn't let their words get to her. Instead, her journey had reaffirmed her beliefs that the gods were merciful and had ended her father's suffering as she had prayed. At the same time every year, during the anniversary of her father's passing, Yingtai ventures to The Gods' Temple to fast for three days and to pay her respects to goddesses Evka and Dabria.
Although Yingtai told her mother of the gods' grace, the Queen was overcome with a sadness which she was unable to shake. The love she felt for her husband was deeply rooted and those who saw her in private came to see just how wracked with depression she truly was. She would spend most of her time alone, sobbing and sleeping. Though, whenever the dynasty demanded a leader, she would come to her senses and be the brave, stoic leader which was expected of her. To the majority of the clan, she came off strong, powerful, and unmoved by her husband's early demise, but Yingtai knew the pain and suffering which her mother really felt. Eventually, she too passed away, though not of any sickness; rather, it was of old age and a fierce cough which stole the air from her lungs one evening.
After a civil discussion and some attempts at debating, it was decided that Nianzu would take up the position of king rather than Yingtai. She was, however, given the opportunity to become a duchess. As a duchess, she would be able to put all of her training to use and would only assume the role of dynasty leader if her brother were to temporarily leave or if he were to die, given that he didn't have any heirs to stand in his place. While the position was tempting, she decided to humble herself by becoming a nanny instead. She had always loved children and it would allow her to use some of her training to protect and teach the young. Not to mention, it allowed her to avoid heated conflicts which would certainly come about in a higher position.
Yingtai handles her role as nanny with seriousness and dedication. Because she has come from the top of the hierarchy and knows what is expected of the superior ranks, she is the go-to caretaker for the offspring of the king/queen, duke/duchess, and guardians. Although she is well known as an "upper division nanny," she would not turn away any young cub whose parents are too busy to look after them.
(the following paragraph is written mostly as a note to myself, so I can try to keep things realistic)
Most mothers are expected to temporarily give up their position in the clan in order to look after their own children until the cubs are about one month old. From there, the children can be left in the nursery where a nanny will watch over the cubs, though mothers are still expected to return by sunset and sunrise to feed their offspring. When the children turn six months and begin eating solid foods, mothers are allowed to leave their cubs for extended periods of time, since the nanny is capable of providing food (with help from the hunters). Most nannies remain in the nursery which is a dedicated area for cubs and caretakers, but Yingtai takes it upon herself to go on walks with some of the older cubs in order to show them around the dynasty and to teach them how to climb, swim, fish, and find berries. When a cub turns one year old, they are expected to begin apprenticing for a rank of their choosing, though nannies can help them find what occupation best suits their abilities and can help find someone to mentor them. When the cub is two, they should no longer need the assistance of a nanny, though they may still be apprenticing for a position. By three, the now-grown cub should have secured a position in the clan.
